Life as a Journey: A Reflection on Rev. Eric McLachlan's Sermon

CPC

Updated: Feb 3

Life is often compared to a journey—full of stops, starts, and unexpected turns. In his recent sermon, Rev. Eric McLachlan reminded us how the Bible often portrays this imagery, encouraging us to reflect on the direction of our own spiritual travels.

Using the story of the golden calf from Exodus, Rev. McLachlan highlighted three key lessons from the journey of God's people:

  1. The Foolishness That Paralyzed God's PeopleWhen Moses delayed returning from Mount Sinai, the Israelites fell into fear and doubt. They sought comfort in creating a golden calf, a man-made god to lead them. This act of disobedience brought their spiritual journey to a halt. Their lack of vision and trust in God led to paralysis and stagnation—an all-too-familiar struggle in our own lives when fear takes hold.

  2. The Fortitude That Protected God's PeopleDespite their disobedience, Moses interceded on behalf of the people, pleading for God's forgiveness. Through his leadership, the Israelites were given the courage and determination to move forward. Rev. McLachlan reminded us that true leadership inspires resilience, vision, and hope, even in the most challenging circumstances.

  3. The Faith That Prepared God's PeopleBefore continuing their journey, the Israelites had to repent and seek God's forgiveness. Moses prayed for assurance and asked God to reveal His plans so they could walk in His ways. Rev. McLachlan challenged us to ask the same of God: “Show me your plans, so I may serve you and continue to please you.

As we stand at the start of a new year, Rev. McLachlan’s sermon is a timely reminder of the importance of trusting God in every season of life. When we surrender our fears and failures to Him, God offers us a renewed vision, mercy, and grace to continue our journey with confidence.

May we reflect on the words of Moses: "Love the Lord your God, obey Him, and be faithful to Him" (Deuteronomy 30:20). In doing so, we will find the courage to press on and the faith to see God’s goodness in every step of our journey.
